Step by step instructions on migrating data to the latest version of TopSolid.
Migration Notes
- Before beginning the migration process, be aware it can take 1 to 8 hours to complete, depending on the size of your data and number of clients.
- Set an appropriate amount of time aside to create backups, have your PDM taken off-line, and migrate data over.
- While it is not recommended to migrate while you have large projects in process, it is fine if you do not finish prior to migration.
- At a logical point, stop, completely check-in all open projects, then proceed to the Backup process.
- After migration, it may be necessary to upgrade your data to the new version. To manage this, open the document you wish to upgrade, go to the 7 icon | Edit | Upgrade option and select it. This will update the entire document to use the newer version of TopSolid. Once upgraded, use CTRL+R to rebuild the document. This recalculates the document based on the latest software changes.
- In CAM, Upgrade recalculates toolpaths with the latest algorithms.
The TopSolid USA support team is available to assist you with this migration process for up to one-hour of online support. To be fair to all clients, remote assistance of more than one hour is outside the scope of Gold Level support and will be billed out as a service. Please contact your TopSolid Sales-Team account manager and they can quote, check availability and schedule online migration services.

If you are running a Client-Server setup, ALL client PCs must perform Check-in
- Refresh the Changes Manager multiple times to verify all data is completely checked-in
1.) 2.)
3.) 4.)
Backup Utility - PDM
- Using the TopSolid Backup Utility or TopSolid PDM Server Backup Utility, create a complete backup of your PDM data.
- The backup data should be stored on another disk, not the disk TopSolid is installed on, a server location is best.
Local PDM Client -Server PDM
- Under Complete, “Save now” will create a backup file to the defined location. Previous backups will appear in the list at the bottom of the window.
Once the data backup process is complete, it is safe to move forward with the migration process to TopSolid 7.17
Windows®
TopSolid is a Windows Certified software. Therefore, it is important to Update Windows prior to the installation of TopSolid and keep your computer up to date. It is also recommended to activate the advanced option ‘Receive updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows’.
Installation
- Prior to beginning the installation, it is recommended that you review the TopSolid Installation Guide.
- The guide is available at the beginning of installation via pop-up or can be found in the ...\Help\en, folder wherever you downloaded the digital installation Setup file.
- After reviewing the Installation Guide, we can now begin the installation of the newest version of TopSolid
The migration of data to TopSolid version 7.17, is only possible from the previous version, 7.15. Prior to 7.15, data may not have necessary information due to changes in the software as it evolves. Therefore, it’s required to perform updates to TopSolid 7.15, in order, prior to beginning the migration process to 7.16.
Digital Download
As of version 7.14, DVD’s are no longer available. TopSolid is downloadable as a digital download only. There has been a dedicated Content Delivery Network (CDN) created exclusively for the delivery and download of TopSolid. This is a series of mirrored websites set up globally to ease network traffic when downloading TopSolid.
The link you will receive directs you to the TopSolid CDN and will begin downloading an executable file, TopSolid’Downloader.exe. By default, this file will be saved to your hard drive Download folder. If you are unable to download from the internet, please let us know.
- This download will begin automatically, and you will see the download progress in your web browser.
- Depending on the browser you use, you may need to designate a save location. TopSolid’Downloader, when launched, will securely connect you to our CDN again for downloading the digital Setup file.
- In your C:\ Download folder [or your specified file path] you will find the “TopSolid'Downloader”.
- Double click to launch this application. You may receive a security pop-up, choose yes to continue. Specify the download path where you want the Setup file to be saved, check Launch Setup at the end of the download (or do not check and come back to installation later), then Download.
The software download will begin, depending on your internet speed, this could be 15 to 45 minutes.
“Do you want to clean download folder?” is asking if you want to delete the installation files. Please choose NO or the software installation file will be deleted and you will have to download it again!
Before Starting
